Cheburashka is the founder of a large family. Starting from the initial An-72A there has been a number of versions in series production.

An-71: AWACS version, See section "In the military"

An-72ATis the dedicated freighter equipped to handle standart international containers.

An-72P: dedicated maritime surveillance platform and military version of Cheburashka. See section "In the military"

An-72S: this is an executive transport with the cabin split into three compartments, the forward compartment housing the galley, toilets and wardrobe, with baggage, the three-seat sofa and a work table in the next compartment (or alternatively the sofa and three pairs of armchairs), and with 12 pairs of armchairs in the rear compartment. An-72S can be reconfigured as a freighter, or as a 38-seat transport with tip-up seats along the cabin sides, or as an air ambulance with eight stretcher patients.

An-74: the original An-74 was designed as An-72 version for all-weather operation, including Arctic and Antarctic flying, and as replacement for IL-14s. An-74 primary role was to support Arctic scientific stations and Antarctic expeditions, observe and monitore ice flows and ice build-up, airdrop supplies to motorized expeditions. Flight crew consists of four or five members. An-74 features wing, tail unit and engine air intake de-icing, advanced navigation aids, including inertial navigation system, provision for wheel/ski landing gear, increased fuel capasity and increased maximum T-O weight. Airframe is identical to An-72 except for two blister windows at rear of flight deck and front of cabin on port side. An-74 is convertible in field for ambulance, firefighting and other duties.

An-74-200: freight version of "Polar Cheburashka" with D-36 series 3A engines of unchanged rating, increased payload and maximum T-O weight. Able to carry four YAK-2.5 containers. Crew consists of four or five.

An-74TK-200D Salon: business transport for 10 to 16 passengers, with increased cabin comfort. equipment includes telephone, fax, video, bar refrigerator, galley and separate rest area. Optional compartment for car at rear. Powerplant and weights as basic An-74, crew consists of four or five.

An-74T-200A: cargo version, features loading winch, roller conveyors in floor; crew of only two members.

An-74TK-200: convertible cargo/passenger aircraft with twin-seats for 52 passengers that fold against cabin walls , and with baggage racks, buffet/galley and toilet. Alternative all-cargo or all-passenger layouts. Typical combi options include 12 passengers plus 6000 kg of freight and 20 passengers plus 4500 kg of freight. Build-in loading equipment. Crew consists of two members.

An-74T-100: is similar to An-74T-200, but features navigation station (crew of four).

An-74TK-100: as An-74TK-200, with navigator and flight engineer stations (crew of four).

An-74-400: stretched version, currently under development.
